How to DonateOur Services
Overview

Seton Home is a licensed residential basic care facility chartered by the State of Texas and licensed by the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services as a Basic Child Care Facility. For the past 26 years, Seton Home has been the only licensed facility in South Texas that focuses services exclusively for homeless pregnant and parenting adolescents who have chosen to keep and parent their children.

The Seton Home staff tailors the curriculum to the individual needs of the client and addresses the general needs of the client population.

Essential Components

Academic and Vocational Education is a major priority of Seton Home, as 70% of teens drop out of school after becoming pregnant.
  • All students are enrolled in credit-recovery programs at school, GED programs, college or vocational programs.
  • Credit recovery allows our residents to get on the appropriate educational track, and in some cases, accelerate their education progress.
Parenting Education and Infant and Child Development works to reverse destructive parenting patterns that typify their childhoods and replace them with positive attitudes and nurturing parenting skills.
  • Seton Home residents participate in the Precious Minds New Connections Program, funded by the Kronkosky Foundation, which is composed of 20 weeks of group class and weekly individual parenting sessions.
  • Parenting topics include empathy, appropriate discipline, redirection, self-esteem, respect and empowering children.
Onsite Child Development Center is available for Seton Home residents during school hours, staffed by certified child care providers.
  • Provides security to the teen parents as they accelerate their educational plans.
  • Provides teaching opportunities on child development between the parents and childcare staff.
Spirituality and Faith Development promotes acceptance and positive self-development as the residents begin to view themselves and their babies as worthy and unique creations of God.
  • A volunteer from the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) serves a one-year term as the Spirituality Coordinator and coordinates many faith-based activities and a weekly youth group meeting.
  • Residents are also encouraged to attend religious services at the congregation of their choice, and are transported with the assistance of volunteers.
  • Seton Home also enjoys great support from the churches of the Archdiocese of San Antonio in the way of spiritual, financial and volunteer support.

Independent Living Skills are taught by Independent Living Skills Instructors (ILSI), providing 24-hour care and supervision to our teens and infants. Curriculum includes the following:
  • Housekeeping, nutrition, menu planning and food preparation, personal and child health care, personal appearance and hygiene, household budgeting and utilizing community resources
Psychological, Emotional, Attitudinal Development and Life Skills are addressed by a therapist and include:
  • Time management, stress management, coping, conflict resolution, self-esteem building, and leadership skills
Job and Career Development Program allows the young parent to attain higher education or career training. This also allows for setting and achieving realistic vocational and educational goals. Services include:
  • Computer skills classes, job skills enrichment, job seeking skills, training in applications, interviews, appropriate attire, and scholarship and financial aid resource
Community Resources are provided pro-bono or by contract with the following organizations:
  • Preparation for Adult Living (P.A.L.) - The P.A.L. program is composed of several training modules specific to job skill readiness, budgeting, transportation, health, housing interpersonal skills, career development activities and basic computer skills. This contract for professional services is currently under development and strictly for residents under Child Protective Services (CPS) guidance.
  • Healing Arts - The Healing Arts Project believes that healing can come from the learning and practice of the arts, such as mosaics, poetry, journaling, sewing, pottery, drawing, painting and photography. This course provides the residents with the tools to express themselves in creative and non-destructive ways.
